Best Longboard Brands

It hard to choose a longboard?

There sure are a LOT of best longboard brands on the market, aren’t there? SO hard to choose! Some are definitely worth the money – others, not so much.

After reading around to see all the top longboard brands other reviewers like, I decided it was time to share what is the best longboard I think are the best value.

In a hurry?

While there are dozens of different manufacturers, I narrowed it down to what I strongly believe are the top 5 brands currently available on the market. These brands are, in no specific order: Sector 9, Quest, Atom, Yocaher, and EightBit.

Sector 9

Sector 9 is the best longboard brand if you are a novice. They are affordable, extremely stylish (hence why they are so commercialized), and well-known around the globe. This past year, the market for longboards took off like a skyrocket, which created an influx of new riders. Thus, Sector 9 was able to claim their place as best longboards 2014.

The Best Sector 9 Longboards

Sector 9 Blue Wave Lookout dropthrough Complete Longboard Skateboard, 9.6-Inch x 42.0-Inch
While it may not be the most affordable longboard on the market?

  1. It is easily one of the best.
  2. The Sector 9 Lookout is the perfect board for beginning riders.
  3. It is one of the most versatile on the market.
  4. It is a great cruising longboard while also being very effective downhill.

Sector 9 Natasha Downhill Division 40

If you want to master riding on slopes and hills, I strongly recommend taking a look at the Sector 9 Natasha. I believe it is the best downhill longboard currently available on the market.
Why?

  1. While it may be shorter than your traditional downhill boards (it’s only 40 inch), its superior design and quality make it better than the longer ones for downhill riding.
  2. Get ready to shell out some bucks for it, but it’s well worth every penny.

Sector 9 Natasha Downhill Division 40Inch Drop Through Complete Longboard

The Fractal is the board you want to buy if you want to show off to your friends.

      1. It’s great for freeriding and cruising, and comes with some of the best wheels on the market (making the cost not seem to high).
      2. While it can handle downhill riding, it’s not made for extreme speeds, so be careful as it can cause unnecessary wear and tear.

Quest

Quality. Quality. Quality. That is the simplest way to describe Quest. Unlike most other brands, they don’t just release longboard after longboard saturating the name. They only make a few different boards, and the common theme in all of them is superior design. At the same time, they are all reasonably priced, making it great for beginners but also one of the top cruising longboard brands on the market today.

The Best Quest Longboards

Quest Super Cruiser Artisan Bamboo Longboard Skateboard (44-Inch)
  1. As the name probably lets you know, this is the best cruiser longboard. There is nothing like it on the market.
  2. It is a 44-inch masterpiece made of gorgeous bamboo. If riding it wasn’t so appealing, it might be worth just hanging on your wall as an art piece!

Quest Native Spirit Kick Tail Longboard Skateboard, 40-Inch

Why you should by this?

  1. If you’re brand new to the sport, look no further. For well under $100, you won’t be able to find a board as high-quality as this one. After all, every Quest board is very high quality.
  2. A great hardwood maple deck makes it as durable as any longboard out there. Perfect for going to class or riding around town!

Quest Rorshack Bamboo Longboard Skateboard (34-Inch)
  1. The Rorshack is considered a “crossover” longboard, a mix of styles that is extremely popular with snowboarders, skateboarders, and people who like to just ride!
  2. Its stable, great for tricks and carving, yet provides the same benefits that your longer, more popular longboards have

Atom

I consider Atom to be an intermediate brand of longboards. For the most part, they are neither the cheapest nor the most expensive. Yet they offer great value for the price, while also having a wide array of choices for all types of styles. Whether you like to ride downhill, freestyle, or just cruise, they have quite a few choices that makes them one of the most popular and recognizable brands in longboarding, and well deserving of that honor may I add. While Sector 9 reigned last year with all the new riders, it’s Atom who is making the best longboard brand 2015.

The Best Atom Longboards

Atom Drop-Through Longboard (41-Inch)

In my opinion, this is the best longboard ever.

  1. Not only is it extremely affordable that even a novice can purchase it (without feeling ripped off!), but it is made superior quality that bests every other comparable board.
  2. Not only does it provide great stability making it much easier to ride (and to learn), but it comes with top of the line bearings that are great for downhill treks.

Atom Drop Deck Longboard (41-Inch)
  1. The Drop Deck is perfect for any type of rider — whether it is your first board or your 20th. The name says it all, the deck is curved (or “drops”) allowing you to get outstanding footing which makes carving and doing tricks much easier.
  2. In addition, it has a great turn radius, making it perfect for taking it to town and all the turns that come with such a journey.

Atom Pintail Longboard

The Atom Pintail is one of the highest-rated longboards on the market. There is one thing in common with everyone’s feedback:

  1. it is Perfect for cruising and perfect for beginners.
  2. If you are only now getting into longboarding, have a serious look at the Pintail as its combination of style, price, and durability make it a great purchase.

Yocaher

If you consider yourself a creative rider, I strongly urge you to look Yocaher for your next longboard. They aren’t the cheapest around, so it might not be the best idea if you are new to the sport, but they are simply amazing. If you are looking for a carving longboard, look no further as they are built to turn, slide, and maneuver unlike anything else you’ve been on before. Durable yet flexible, they are worth every penny. It is no secret why they’ve been around for forty years and counting.

The Best Yocaher Longboards

Yocaher Professional Speed Drop Down Stained Complete Longboard
  1. It’s hard to find a professional-level board for 100 bucks. Yocaher has made it possible with its Drop-Through board that is great for going at high speeds.
  2. Its design has eliminated wobbles that are so common when going fast, while the bearings and wheels can handle it with minimal wear.

Yocaher Professional Speed Drop Down Stained Complete Longboard

My favorite use for this board is for freeriding.

  1. It just has the perfect design, size, and weight to ride and slide all over the place.
  2. The only thing I noticed was the fact that you might have to put some aftermarket wheels if you want to fully utilize its effectiveness as the stock ones are average. Either way, this board ranks at the top of my list, making it the best freeride longboard.

YOCAHER New Complete Longboard- MINI CRUISER- BANANA CRUISER 27Inch X 8Inch
  1. As the name implies, this board is ideal for cruising. Much smaller than your traditional longboard, it makes it easier to turn and control every movement.
  2. While shorter boards create more movement while riding, which can be uncomfortable for some people, it has benefits that most others don’t have.
  3. If you are using it to ride around campus or to run errands, it is much easier to hold or store than a board that is nearly double in length!

EightBit

A lot of people have never heard of EightBit before, and that’s very unfortunate because they are one of my favorites. While they primarily specialize in skateboards rather than longboards, they use the same crafty design to make stylish boards. The decks on their longboards are one-of-a-kind, the type of elegance that your friends will stare in awe at.

The Best EightBit Longboards

EIGHTBIT 41 Inch Drop Down Complete Longboard
  1. This board is FAST. You will instantly fall in love the second you get on it for the first time.
  2. It is built with superior quality and designed by some of the brightest people in the business.
  3. You will be surprised at how good it can handle and turn while going 30 miles per hour down a slope. I know I was.

EightBit 22 Inch Complete Skate Board - Retro Skateboard

Affordable, easy to ride, and great to learn.

  1. If you aren’t ready to hop on one of the big boards yet, start with something small and simple.
  2. You are hardly making an investment at this price, and it is a great way to get your foot in the door of one of the most extravagant sports out there.

EightBit 27 Inch Complete Skate Board - Retro Skateboard
  1. One step above the 22-inch EightBit board, the 27-inch Complete allows you to feel more like a traditional longboard while having the benefits of a normal skateboard. You can still ride it anywhere with ease, but it won’t be a hassle carrying around.

The Benefits of Longboarding

Longboarding has quite a few benefits that go way beyond the pure freedom, joy, and fun of cruising by yourself or with a group of friends. First of all, you will be able to balance your body much better by mastering a longboard. Balance is a skill that you will be thankful for later on in life — just find someone older than you that can’t even balance themselves standing.

Second, it will save you a lot of time. Why walk when you can ride your board? If you are a student, just think about it! Instead of a 10 minute walk to class, you can turn it into a 5 minute ride (or less). That means 5 more minutes of sleep (or something else!).

Third, you are working out your body much more compared to walking. Longboarding has the ability to train your cardio, abs, calves, and more. As you become more advanced, you will learn a multitude of ways to give yourself a full workout just by using your board!

Lastly, there is nothing more attractive to someone of the opposite sex than a master longboarder! You will be able to show off your carving, freestyling, and freeriding abilities to all your peers, instantly becoming the talk of town. Ever watch a YouTube video of someone doing ridiculous tricks on a board? Ever notice how many views such videos get? Just think about it: that can be you!

Step-by-Step Guide On Picking The Best Longboard

  1. The first thing you need to ask yourself is what budget are you on? There are generally three longboard budgets: $75 and under, $75 to $125, and $125 to $200. Once you decide on a budget, you can eliminate certain boards or brands. In addition, keep in mind that some boards don’t come with the best wheels and/or bearings, meaning you may have to spend additional money on aftermarket parts.
  2. Next, you need to determine your riding level: beginner, intermediate, advanced, or professional. Even if you can afford one of the most expensive boards on the market, it doesn’t make sense to purchase it if you are a novice. There is a process of learning to ride, and it often involves damage to yourself and your board.
  3. Finally, you need to decide what exactly you plan on doing. Are you just trying to learn? Do you plan on cruising long distances? Only riding to class? Freestyling or freeriding? Carving and doing tricks? Speed thrill downhill? As I mentioned above, every board is made for something different. There are different designs that help turning or maneuvering depending on what you plan on doing. Some boards have a deck that flexes. Others have a kicktail (similar to a skateboard). If you are not sure, I suggest you try one of the versatile longboards that can handle speed and creativity. If speed is a must, stay away from the shorter boards, as they just can’t handle it.

Longboarding Tips

Here are some tips that can help both novice and experienced riders master the craft! Some of them may seem obvious, but if I mention it here, I cannot stress how important it is if you want to become the cream of the crop.

  • Practice makes perfect. Even if you don’t feel like going longboarding on a certain day, just go out and practice. Every single time you step on a board, you will get better at it. Your body remembers what position to take. You will be able to better balance yourself each and every time. Without practice, you are setting yourself up to look like a fool when it counts most.
  • Take it slow. Everyone wants to be able to do the awesome carves and tricks that you so often see on social media sites like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Vine. But I can guarantee you that those individuals took my first piece of advice and practiced. It is awesome riding downhill at 35 MPH, but if you’ve never done it before, you are going to hurt yourself. It takes time to master any craft, longboarding included.
    • Use increments. For example, if your goal is to do just that — master riding downhill at 35 MPH — start on a much less steeper decline. Learn to ride at 5, 10, 15, 20 MPH, and so on. You can’t just expect to be able to handle one of the most difficult parts of the sport without working your way up, just as with anything in life.
  • Don’t be afraid to fall. Taking a bad fall sucks. It hurts like hell. It might hurt you enough that you won’t be able to ride for a day or two. Its part of it. If you are afraid to take a fall, you will never be comfortable riding, and you will regret it in the long run. I’m not saying go out there and hurt yourself, but understand that just like any sport injury is an unfortunate consequence, but you can’t let it hold you back or you will never excel.
  • Choose the correct board. As I went over above, not all boards are made for the same thing. By just changing a couple minor design aspects, a board can be much more useful for cruising and totally useless for carving or doing tricks. If you want to do it all, you will have to own multiple boards.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why do I need to purchase new bearings and/or wheels?
    • You don’t always need to, it depends on the board and manufacturer. Some come with exceptional ones and some don’t. Bad bearings will limit your top speed while feeling uncomfortable. Bad wheels can make it very hard to get a good turn radius and are even dangerous.
  • What is the best longboard for children?
    • I recommend something small to start with, such as the Yocaher Mini Cruiser or the EightBit 22 or 27-inch boards. Smaller boards are easier to control and thus easier to learn on.
  • Can I do tricks on any longboard?
    • Theoretically, yes, you can do tricks on any board. However, some boards are just not designed to do tricks on, so you will damage components of the board that can’t handle it. I do not recommend doing tricks on not designed for them. Aside from being dangerous, it will kill the lifespan of the longboard.
  • How do I maintain my longboard?
    • Don’t store it outside. Both rain and direct sunlight can damage it in the long term. That doesn’t mean you can’t ride in the rain or sun, but don’t leave it out, unused, for extended periods of time. Even if you do ride in the rain, wipe it down when you get inside. You will thank me in the long run.
